Background: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease in which a demyelination process occurs, leading to disorders of nerve signal transmission. Researchers identified a significant relationship between neurological diseases and serum glycoprotein concentrations. In this regard, this study aimed to determine the serum concentration of glycoprotein BP180 in patients with multiple sclerosis and in the control group at Al-Zahra Hospital (S).
Methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted in 1401 at the Isfahan Super specialty Hospital, 70 participants were enrolled and divided into two groups of MS patients (40 people) and a healthy control group (30 people). A researcher-made questionnaire was provided to them, collecting information related to age, past disease history, etc. Then, BP180 autoantibody was tittered using Euro immunoassay kits (made in Europe) by ELISA. Independent t-test and chi-square were used to analyze the data.
Findings: Mean BP180 level was measured as 33.22 IU/dL in the case group and 11.91 IU/dL in the control group. BP180 level was significantly higher in the MS group. (P<0.0001).
Conclusion: Overall, our results in favor to most of articles reports that BP180 autoantibody is significantly higher in MS patients rather than the normal population. This may be the possible explanation for the strong association of MS and BP.
