Background: Hypothyroidism is the second most common endocrine disorder, with a prevalence of 1-2% worldwide. Fatigue is one of its complications, making it essential to find strategies to manage it. This systematic review investigated effective methods for reducing fatigue in patients with hypothyroidism.
Methods: In this systematic review, the keywords related to 'fatigue' and 'hypothyroidism' were extensively searched in international and national databases such as Web of Science, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Irandoc, SID, Magiran, and the Google Scholar search engine. The initial search yielded 70 studies. The inclusion criteria were studies published in Persian or English. Grey literature was excluded. No time limit was applied. After removing duplicates and critically appraising the studies, six studies were ultimately analyzed. Ethical considerations were observed and the abstract was reported according to PRISMA.
Findings: Studies showed that levothyroxine and synbiotic, Labeesity, and L-carnitine supplements were effective in improving fatigue in patients with hypothyroidism. L-carnitine, in particular, played an effective role in reducing fatigue after thyroidectomy in patients under 50 years of age. Also, inhalation of an aromatherapy combination containing peppermint, black pepper, clove bud, white grapefruit, and bergamot has been effective in improving fatigue in women with hypothyroidism, especially in the dimensions of global, emotional, and general fatigue. A diet including beef, green vegetables, high-fat milk, and butter in age-appropriate amounts has had a significant effect on reducing fatigue in affected children.
Conclusion: It seems that some supplements, aromatherapy and dietary regulation are effective in reducing fatigue in patients with hypothyroidism. Future studies are suggested to compare the effectiveness of these methods.
