Background: Considering that many women during their life experience breast pain that is causing their anxiety, in this study we tried to measure the sensitivity and specificity of breast ultrasound and mammography in diagnosis of malignancies in women with breast pain. Methods: In this study, 74 female patients who were complaining of breast pain and their doctors prescribed ultrasound and mammography, were studied. Data from mammography and ultrasound outcome was compared with data of fine needle aspiration (FNA) and the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value of these procedures were measured.Finding: Only three cases were diagnosed breast cancer patients with FNA. In this study, mammography sensitivity and specificity were respectively 100% and 98.2% and ultrasound sensitivity and specificity were 67% and 97.2% respectively. Conclusion: The results obtained from this study indicate that in strong suspicious cases of breast cancer, ultrasound and mammography are not appropriate procedures and an alternative to FNA. In these cases biopsy is essential.
