Abstract
There are some evidences on the anti-inflammatory effects of Solenanthus circinnatus in traditional medicine; and its applications in confusion and bone fractures. In this study, we compared the effect of solenanthus circinnatus root extract on acute carrageen induced inflammation, in the rats hind paw with anti-inflammatory effect of ibuprofen. Background: Eighty male rats were divided in to eight groups. Paw edema was induced by intraplantar injection of 0.1 ml of 0.5% carrageen solution. Different doses of solenanthus circinnatus root extract (50, 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg) and ibuprofen (12 mg/kg) intraperitonealy was administered ten minutes before injection of carrageen. Assessment of edema was performed by the evaluation of volume change as determined by plethysomometry. Methods: The results showed that the ibuprofen and the total dose of extract (Except 50 mg/kg) exerts a significant inhibitory effect on hind paw edema (P < 0.01). With respect to variation Percentage, the maximum inhibition was achieved at a dose of 300 mg/kg of the extract and this does is comparable to ibuprofen at a dose of 12 mg/kg. Findings: It is suggested that Solenanthus circinnatus root extract is able to inhibit acute inflammatory response in the rat hind paw.
