Background: The elderly population uses the highest amount of drugs due to various disorders. They commonly face drug interactions as well. On the other hand, most of the elderly believe in the effects of medicinal plants and widely use them to treat their diseases. Although medicinal herbs have fewer side effects, nursing home residents do not access them under medical supervision. The aim of this study was to review the application of herbal medicines under medical supervision in nursing homes in Isfahan, Iran. Methods: In a descriptive-analytical study during November-December 2008, doctors and nurses working in nursing homes in Isfahan were included. There are 10 private and charity nursing homes in Isfahan. We referred to all centers and performed open interviews with the doctors or nurses in charge. Their comments were collected and analyzed. Results: Based on the results, 98% of the studied doctors and nurses did not believe in complementary and herbal medicine and indeed preferred chemical drugs. However, many seniors believed this kind of treatment to be better. The most common herbal medicines in these centers were musyllium and C.lax to eliminate constipation. Conclusion: Regarding the side effects of some chemical drugs and the existing belief in herbal medicines among the elderly, it is recommended to employ doctors with a tendency toward traditional medicine and enough information in this field.
