Background: About 90% of newborns begin to breathe immediately after birth without any need for special action. The remaining 10% have to start breathing, require resuscitation of which only 1% require advanced resuscitation measures such as cardiac massage and the use of drugs. Therefore, in order to determine the need for neonatal resuscitation and their outcomes, this research was conducted. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the infants were selected using convenience sampling method in Bahar hospital in Shahroud City, Iran. Demographic and maternal obstetrical data and the information about the weight and the need for resuscitation and neonatal outcome were extracted from the profiles. Data analysis was performed using t and chi-square tests via SPSS software. The significance level for all tests was considered as P < 0.05.Findings: 6677 newborns were enrolled in the study. The mean age of mothers was 27.20 ± 5.43 years and the average maternal education was 3.91 ± 10.17 years. The mean of neonatal weight was 3126.09 ± 484.31 grams. 2.70% of newborns required resuscitation measures such as the heating and drying. 1.30% were revived with ventilation, and 0.40% with cardiac massage. According to the chi-square test, there was a positive and significant relationship between the need for newborn resuscitation and hospitalization in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU) (P = 0.001). There was a significant negative correlation between weight gain and hospitalization (P = 0.001).Conclusion: Given the high percentage of neonatal hospitalizations in the intensive care unit, following resuscitation procedures and to reduce its complications, it is recommended that a more structured program be developed in the case of supportive and caring guidelines for both staff and mothers.
