Abstract
Measurement of salivary testosterone and estradiol can used instead of serum level. In spite of its convenience and in expensive, measurement of salivary testosterone and estradiol have not gained widespread popularity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between salivary and serum testosterone and estradiol by radioimmunoassay (RIA). Background: A total number of 80 person, including woman (n=42) and men (n=38), aged 46 16.5 were recuried from Ghaem hospital. Paired saliva and serum samples were obtained after specialized protocols. Salivary and blood samples were collected at 8 to 9 A.M. then testosterone and estradiol in saliva and total testosterone and estradiol in serum were measured with a commercial radioimmunoassay (RIA). Methods: Mean serum testosterone was 313.68 ± 322.25 and mean salivary testosterone was 14.60 ± 23.26 ng/dl. Significant linear correlation was found between salivary and serum testosterone (r=0/33, P= 0.003). Mean serum estradiol was 269.54 1279.0/02 and mean salivary estradiol was 10.99 17/00 pg/dl. Significant linear correlation was not found between salivary and serum estradiol (r = 0.20, P = 0.07) Findings: Our results indicate that salivary testosterone and estradiol measured with RIA can be used in place of serum total testosterone and estradiol. Our result showed that salivary level represent the biologically and, free fraction of these hormones. Salivary measurement of these hormones is non invasive and has not any stress. Conclusion: Serum, salivary, testosterone, estradiol. Key words:
