Exploring the Correlation between Social Intelligence and Spiritual Intelligence with Mental Health in Operating Room and Anesthesiology Students at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences

Abstract

Background: Cultivating social and spiritual intelligence among operating room and anesthesiology students is essential for preparing them to thrive in high-stress environments and maintain their mental health. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between social and spiritual intelligence and mental health among students at Hamadan University of Medical Sciences in 2023.
Methods: This cross-sectional study selected 355 operating room and anesthesiology students via convenience sampling. Data were collected using demographic questionnaires, the Abdollahi Spiritual Intelligence Questionnaire, the Tromsø Social Intelligence Scale, and the Goldberg Mental Health Questionnaire. Statistical methods were used for data analysis.
Findings: The majority of participants were female (53%), single (92.7%), unemployed (85.9%), and in their eighth semester (41.4%). A significant inverse correlation was observed between mental health scores and spiritual intelligence scores (P = 0.02, r = -0.118), indicating that a lower score on the GHQ-28 questionnaire represents a higher level of mental health. Additionally, there was a negative and non-significant relationship between mental health and social intelligence scores (P = 0.53, r = -0.03). Furthermore, a strong, positive association was found between spiritual and social intelligence (P < 0.001, r = 0.236). Regression analysis indicated that each one-point increase in spiritual intelligence corresponded to a 4% improvement in mental health scores, (P = 0.09).
Conclusion: This study found that students with higher spiritual intelligence showed better mental health. Given the link between spiritual and social intelligence, improving spiritual intelligence may also enhance social intelligence. These findings can help university administrators and educational planners to develop targeted programs to strengthen students' spiritual intelligence.
