Investigating Antibiotic Resistance of UTI-Causing Agents in Pregnant Women Referred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital

Abstract

Background: Urinary tract infection in pregnant women is one of the significant concerns during pregnancy due to fetal and maternal complications and is associated with some adverse outcomes. In this regard, the study was conducted to determine the antibiotic resistance of factors causing urinary tract infection(UTI) in pregnant women referred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 505 midstream urine samples from pregnant women referred to Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Isfahan from the beginning of September 2020 to the end of February 2021 were investigated and cultured. The required information was collected through a checklist. Then the analysis was done in terms of urinary infection and the culture and antibiotic sensitivity check was done using standard antibiotic disks on the samples.
Findings: The prevalence of urinary tract infection was 8.7%. Gram-negative bacteria were more prevalent. Gram-negative bacteria accounted for 93.2% of cases, while Gram-positive bacteria accounted for 6.8%. The distribution of isolated bacteria was as follows: Escherichia coli 65.9%, coagulase-negative Staphylococcus 6.6%, Klebsiella 11.4%, Citrobacter 6.8%, Enterobacter 9.1%. Additionally, the prevalence of asymptomatic bacteriuria was 4.6%. The results of the chi-square test showed no significant association between symptom presence and a positive culture result.
Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, the prevalence was higher for Gram-negative bacteria, with Escherichia coli being the most prevalent. Differences in prevalence rates are acceptable considering geographical variations and sample size differences. These findings are applicable in the fields of treatment and the health system.
