Background: Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB) is regarded as one of the most common complaints in gynecological clinics and can lead to anemia, weakness, general discomfort, and can prevent the person from participating in social activities. Its prevalence increases with age. This study aimed to investigate the causes of AUB based on the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) classification and to compare the frequency of these causes between reproductive-age and premenopausal patient groups based on pathological results.
Methods: In this retrospective study, the records of patients who presented with AUB at Beheshti Hospital, Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, from March 2022 to March 2023 and underwent diagnostic curettage were reviewed. Individuals aged 15-55 years were included. Participants were divided into two groups: reproductive (15-45) and pre-menopausal (46-55).
Findings: In the premenopausal group, the frequency of polyp was 54.76%, adenomyosis 6.36%, leiomyoma 23.02%, malignancies 1.58%, coagulation disorders 0.79%, endometrial disorders 10.32%, unclassified factors 0.79%, and polyp+leiomyoma was 2.38%. In the reproductive group, the frequency of polyp was 57.41%, adenomyosis 0.76%, leiomyoma 30.04%, malignancy 1.52%, coagulation disorders 0.38%, endometrial disorder 7.99%, coagulation disorder + polyp 0.38%, and polyp + leiomyoma 1.52%. The comparison of the age groups showed that the frequency of adenomyosis in both groups was significantly different.
Conclusion: The frequency of polyp, leiomyoma and endometrial disorder ranked first to third, respectively in both age groups and the most common cause of AUB was polyps.
