Abstract
Methods: This research was conducted as a mixed-methods study, employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. In the qualitative part, purposive sampling was performed and, using semi-structured in-depth interviews until reaching theoretical saturation, data collection concluded with 17 participants and a review of 110 texts and articles. The main and sub-categories were identified using thematic analysis. In the quantitative part, for the purpose of validating the conceptual model from the qualitative phase, a descriptive survey research method was used with a researcher-made questionnaire derived from the 99 items identified in the qualitative part. The proposed model was evaluated, and data were analyzed using structural equation modeling, PLS software, and the social sciences software package.
Findings: Initial coding using the content analysis method resulted in the identification of 7 categories, including belief, value, attitude, norm, customs, language/communication, and ideas, which were classified under 167 concept codes. From these, 99 concept codes were ultimately confirmed, and the initial conceptual model emerged. The results of the quantitative analysis also showed that, according to the fit indices, the patient safety culture model has a good fit.
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that paying attention to the local culture of each region and its values, beliefs, and even customs can be an effective tool in observing patient safety, and ignoring them will likely have negative consequences.
