Abstract
Background: The use of advanced technologies in dentistry can significantly improve patient care. The present study aimed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of clinical dental students in Tabriz regarding the applications of artificial intelligence in dentistry.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 280 students were randomly selected using a convenience sampling method from general dentistry courses at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences in 2024. A questionnaire on knowledge and attitude about the applications of artificial intelligence in dentistry was given to them and the completed questionnaires were received on the same day. After collecting the questionnaires, the knowledge and attitude scores were determined. The questionnaire was prepared in 3 sections: demographic information (academic semester, gender, age), the second section included knowledge questions (15 questions), and the third section included attitude questions (10 questions). Its validity and reliability were determined. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, and Chi-square tests. The significance level of statistical correlation was considered to be 0.05.
Findings: The average level of dental students' awareness of AI applications in dentistry was 9.26 ± 2.03 (out of a maximum score of 15). 12.1% of students had poor awareness, 72.5% had moderate awareness, and 15.4% had good awareness. The average level of students' attitude was 3.78 ± 0.60. 3.2% of students had negative attitudes toward AI applications in dentistry, 50.4% had moderate attitudes, and 46.4% had positive attitudes. The level of awareness and attitude did not show significant differences based on the gender of students. The level of awareness in students of semesters 11 and 12 was significantly higher than other students (P < 0.05), but the level of students' attitude did not show significant differences based on academic semeste.
Conclusion: Students' awareness of the use of artificial intelligence in dentistry was reported to be at an average level.
