Effects of Resvin Supplement on the levels of Interleukin-6 and C-Reactive Protein and Insulin Resistance in Women with Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

Background: Inflammation increases the complications of diabetes mellitus. Antioxidants can reduce inflammation. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are inflammatory factors, and the question is whether the Resvin, as an antioxidant, can reduce the levels of both and impact on insulin resistance?Methods: In this semi-experimental study, with pre-test and post-test design, 16 women with type 2 diabetes were randomly assigned to two equal groups of intervention (mean age: 59.25 ± 5.11 years) and control (mean age: 52.25 ± 10.60 years). Subjects in the intervention group received 400 mg of Resvin supplements daily for 6 weeks. Blood samples were taken for determination of IL-6 and CRP levels and the insulin resistance, before and after the intervention.Finding: After 6 weeks of receiving Resvin supplementation, CRP and IL-6 levels significantly decreased in the intervention group (P < 0.05). Insulin resistance improved significantly, too (P < 0.05).Conclusion: Based on the findings, Resvin supplementation may reduce the inflammatory markers and insulin resistance in women with type 2 diabetes.
