Abstract
Background: Itching is one of the most common complications of burns. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of Aloe Vera on post-burn itching.
Methods: This randomized clinical trial conducted on 60 patients in two groups. In addition to the usual treatment, the intervention group received 100 mg Aloe Vera capsules twice daily (8 am and 8 pm) for one week. The control group received placebo. During the study, the severity of itching in the two groups was assessed using a visual analogue scale (VAS) (0 the lowest and 100 the highest range of numbers). Itching severity was assessed twice during the study (10 am and 10 pm) for a week. The data were analyzed by SPSS statistical software version 23.
Finding: The mean itching severity in the control group at the beginning, during and at the end of the study was 39.1, 30.1, 32.1 and 41.6, 41.2, 33.8 in the Aloe Vera group, respectively. The mean itching intensity at the beginning of the study was the same in the two groups. The itching intensity score decreased during and after the study in the two groups (p value˂0.05), but over time, the itching intensity decreased more in the Aloe Vera group.
Conclusion: Aloe Vera can have a beneficial effect on controlling itching in patients with 2 degree burns. It is recommended that oral Aloe Vera be used as complementary treatment for itching after 2 degree burns.
