Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal endoscopy and the acquisition of tissue samples are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of various gastric problems. Prevalence of different biopsy findings have been evaluated in former studies but few studies have been performed in Iran. Here we aimed to investigate and evaluate the results of gastric biopsies in Isfahan, Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a longitudinal cross-sectional study that was performed in 2020 on reports of gastric biopsies performed in 2013-2018. A total number of 500 gastric biopsies were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data regarding age and gender of patients were gathered. Reports of gastric biopsies were also collected and studied. All data were analyzed using Independent Samples and Chi-Square analysis tests. RESULTS 66.4% of cases had gastritis and 28.4% had gastropathy. Intestinal metaplasia was more common in males (P= 0.002) and in higher ages (P< 0.001). Helicobacter Pylori and chronic gastritis were higher in lower ages (P= 0.01 and P= 0.001 respectively). A total number of 11 patients (2.2%) had benign lesions in their gastric biopsy report and 15 patients (3%) had adenocarcinoma that was significantly more prevalent in higher ages (P= 0.001). CONCLUSION Gastritis and intestinal gastropathy are most prevalent pathological findings in gastric biopsies. The prevalence rate of H-pylori infection, intestinal metaplasia, benign and malignant lesions were in line with the findings of previous studies.
