Quality of Nursing Care and Its Related Factors in Stroke Patients Hospitalized in Khorramabad Teaching Hospitals from the Perspective of Nurses Working in Intensive Care Units

Abstract
Background: Stroke is a leading cause of mortality and disability worldwide, and the quality of nursing care plays a pivotal role in patient outcomes. Given the lack of sufficient data regarding the quality of nursing care for stroke patients in Iran, this study aimed to assess the quality of nursing care—and the factors associated with it—for stroke patients admitted to teaching hospitals in Khorramabad, from the perspective of nurses working in intensive care units.
Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2024 on 205 nurses working in the intensive care and neurology units of teaching hospitals in Khorramabad. A census sampling method was employed. The data collection tool was the Jayad Nursing Care Quality Assessment Scale, the psychometric properties of which—including face, content, and construct validity, as well as reliability—had been confirmed. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Findings: The mean age of the nurses was 32.72 years with a standard deviation of 42.7. Most of them were female (67.8%) and had a bachelor's degree (86.3%). The mean score of quality of nursing care based on the final version of the questionnaire (19 items) was 946.51 from the range of 40 to 57, which was at a good level. There was a significant relationship between quality of nursing care and completion of a stroke training course (P < 0.001), such that nurses who had completed the training course had a higher quality score. However, there was no significant relationship between quality of care and the variables of gender, age, work experience, level of education, and hospital of service (P > 0.05).
Conclusion: The quality of nursing care for stroke patients, as perceived by nurses working in intensive care units at teaching hospitals in Khorramabad, is at a good level. Conducting continuous training courses for nurses in intensive care units is recommended as a factor that enhances the quality of care.
