Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing global concern marked by progressive, irreversible renal function loss. Prolactin, a pituitary hormone, accumulates in renal failure and is linked to various complications. However, data on prolactin changes across all non‑dialysis CKD stages remain scarce. This study aimed to assess serum prolactin levels across different CKD stages and their correlation with renal function indicators.
Methods: This cross‑sectional study enrolled CKD patients attending Babol University of Medical Sciences clinics (2024–2025). After written consent, demographic data were recorded. Fasting morning serum prolactin and creatinine were measured in a single laboratory. Data were analysed using SPSS 26, with p<0.05 considered significant.
Results: Among 70 patients (54.3% male, mean age 64.8 years), most were in stages G3b–G5. Mean creatinine was 3.38 mg/dL. Prolactin levels were significantly higher in advanced stages than in early stages (p<0.001), consistent across both sexes. Prolactin positively correlated with creatinine (r=0.896, p<0.001) and negatively with GFR (r=‑0.925, p<0.001).
Conclusion: Prolactin rises with CKD progression, correlating with creatinine and GFR in both sexes, supporting its role as a relevant marker in CKD. Nevertheless, due to the cross‑sectional design and lack of complete clinical parameters, causal inferences cannot be firmly established.
