[English]

Background: This research aims to design an appropriate structural model to predict the couple's marital satisfaction based on the level of differentiation with the mediation of family functioning.
Methods: This was applied research of quantitative approach and correlation method was used. The statistical population includes all couples referring to 23 counseling centers and guidance associations of parents and teachers in Tehran city in 2015-2016, which were 200 men and 200 women. The cluster sampling method was used in this research. The data collection tools were the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD), Enrich (Evaluation & Nurturing Relationship Issues Communication and Happiness), Marital Satisfaction Scale, and Differentiation of Self Inventory (DSI).
Findings: The research results showed that family functioning plays a mediating role in the relationship between marital satisfaction and differentiation level. Family functioning could mediate the relationship between marital satisfaction and the two components of emotional fusion and emotional fault. However, family functioning could not mediate the components of "I-position" and emotional reactivity.
Conclusion: The results of this study led to the development of an appropriate structural model to explain the relationship between levels of differentiation and marital satisfaction with the mediation role of family functioning.
