Postpartum pain can lead to various complications for both mothers and infants, including prolonged hospital stays, impaired bonding with the newborn, and increased healthcare costs. Effective postpartum pain management is therefore
crucial. Opioid analgesics, while commonly used, can have detrimental effects on breastfeeding infants. As a result, alternative strategies for postpartum pain management have been explored. One such approach is intra-wound infiltration of analgesics, with various drugs and drug combinations investigated to date.
This study aimed to compare the efficacy of bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine versus bupivacaine-fentanyl for postpartum pain management. A double-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted among women undergoing cesarean section at Alzahra and Shahid Beheshti teaching hospitals. Pain scores and hemodynamic parameters were assessed up to 4 hours post-delivery. The results demonstrated significantly lower pain scores in the bupivacainedexmedetomidine group at 4 hours post-delivery. Hemodynamic parameters did not exhibit any significant differences between the two groups.
The findings of this study suggest that bupivacaine-dexmedetomidine is aneffective and safe alternative for postpartum pain management.
