Background and purpose: Orthognathic surgery corrects facial deformity by moving bone segments. In recent years, quality of life has been recognized as an important part of health. Therefore, considering the importance of quality of life in patients, this study aims to evaluate the effect of jaw surgery on quality of life of patients undergoing ortho-surgery treatment
Materials and methods: In this descriptive-analytic study 30 patients with severe skeletal discrepancy in need of orthognathic surgery were included. The Standard questionnaire of Orthognathic Quality of Life Questionnaire (OQLQ) was completed by the patients a week before surgery, one month after surgery, and four months after surgery. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20 software and independent T -test. P-Value was considered or less than 0.05 statistically significant.
Results: The obtained findings showed that there was an improvement in the quality of life in both men and women. There was a significant difference in the average quality of life of the patients in the three measured periods (P<0.001) and the highest quality of life of the patients was 4 months after surgery. In addition, no statistically significant difference in quality of life was found between patients who underwent single jaw or double jaw surgery.
Conclusion: The findings of this investiagation suggested that orthognathic surgery can play an important role in improving the quality of life of class II and III patients. Both single-jaw and double-jaw surgery increased the patients' quality of life.
