Introduction and Objective: Candida albicans infection is known as one of the etiological factors of leukoplakia and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of Candida albicans infection in oral mucosa with leukoplakia, squamous cell carcinoma of the oral mucosa compared to normal healthy mucosa.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed on 60 oral mucosa samples (12 samples related to leukoplakia, 18 samples related to SCC and 30 samples related to normal healthy mucosa). The diagnosis of all the above cases was based on microscopic examination. To identify Candida yeasts, PAS staining was used with a light microscope and magnification of 400. The results were analyzed using Fisher's exact test with a significance level of 0.05.Results: The relative frequency of positive cases of Candida albicans infection in leukoplakia, SCC and normal healthy mucosa samples was reported as 26.67%, 25% and 27.76%, respectively. Statistical analyses showed that there was no significant difference in these respects between the three groups (p = 0.98). Also, the age and gender of the patients did not play a significant role in the detection of Candida yeasts in microscopic samples (p > 0.05).
