Background: Liver cirrhosis is a chronic progressive disease with extensive fibrosis and serious complications, and disease registry systems play an effective role in identifying etiologies and monitoring its trend. Due to the lack of a comprehensive cirrhosis registry system in Iran, this study aimed to design and implement a pilot registry for cirrhotic patients at the Health Clinic of Al-Zahra Hospital (Isfahan).
Methods: In this study, following a literature review and expert consultation, a checklist including demographic, clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic variables was designed via Google Forms. Sampling was conducted as a census of all adult patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cirrhosis who presented between January 10, 2025, and April 20, 2025. Data were collected from medical records, interviews, and laboratory tests, and their validity was continuously assessed.
Findings: Data from 50 patients (66% male, mean age 54.54 years) were recorded. The most common etiologies were idiopathic (28%), fatty liver (26%), and viral hepatitis (20%). The most frequent complication was esophageal varices (68%), and the mean MELD score was 11.89. The predominant prescribed medications included spironolactone, furosemide, and lactulose, and the most common laboratory findings were thrombocytopenia, anemia, and leukopenia.
Conclusion: The results of this pilot study demonstrate a significant burden of complications such as esophageal varices in the studied population and emphasize the necessity of continuous clinical monitoring and the development of national disease registry systems to improve management, follow-up, and therapeutic decision-making in these patients.
