English

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a significant public health concern, commonly causing dyspnea and fatigue in affected individuals. Considering the limitations of pharmacological treatments, complementary therapeutic approaches have gained attention. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of acupressure at points LU7 to LU10 and BL13 on alleviating dyspnea and fatigue in patients with COPD.
Methods: This double-blind clinical trial was conducted in 2024 in Birjand, Iran, involving 60 patients with COPD. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: acupressure at LU7–LU10 (n=20), acupressure at BL13 (n=20), and a control group (n=20). After obtaining written informed consent, data were collected using a demographic questionnaire, the Fatigue Severity Scale, and a dyspnea assessment tool. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 26, employing descriptive and inferential tests, with a significance level set at P<0.05.
Results: Comparison of dyspnea and fatigue scores before and after the intervention revealed a statistically significant reduction in both intervention groups. Specifically, patients receiving acupressure at LU7–LU10 and BL13 demonstrated a significant decrease in dyspnea and fatigue scores post-intervention (P<0.001), whereas no significant changes were observed in the control group (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Acupressure acts as an effective complementary method for reducing dyspnea and fatigue in COPD patients. Points LU7-LU10 showed higher effectiveness compared to BL13. This method can be included in the treatment program for these patients.
