Background:Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) during adolescence requires continuous care and active participation of patients and families due to the physiological, psychological, and social changes occurring during this developmental stage. Maintaining an appropriate body mass index (BMI) is an important component of diabetes management and prevention of long-term complications. Health education models, including the BASNEF model and the Health Belief Model (HBM), may contribute to improving health-related behaviors. This study aimed to compare the effects of education based on the BASNEF model and the Health Belief Model on BMI among adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
Methods:This interventional study was conducted using a pretest–posttest design with a control group among 60 adolescents with type 1 diabetes referred to Taleghani Children’s Educational and Therapeutic Center in Gorgan, Iran, in 2025. Participants were randomly allocated into three groups: HBM-based education (n=20), BASNEF model-based education (n=20), and control group (n=20). Educational interventions were designed and implemented based on the constructs of the BASNEF model and HBM. Body mass index (BMI) was measured before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), paired t-test, and appropriate statistical tests at a significance level of 0.05.
Results:The within-group comparison of BMI before and after the intervention showed no statistically significant changes in the HBM-based education group (P=0.232). Similarly, no significant difference was observed in the BASNEF model group between pre- and post-intervention BMI values (P=0.958). In the control group, BMI changes were also not statistically significant (P=
