Introduction: Preeclampsia is one of the major obstetric syndromes. The preventive use of aspirin in the prevention of preeclampsia has been investigated as an important question in recent years. The present study aimed to determine the cost-effectiveness of aspirin use in the prevention of preeclampsia in pregnancy through a narrative review of available studies.
Methods: In this review, all studies conducted in English until March 20, 2023, in the Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Pub Med, and Google Scholar databases were reviewed as search engines. The main inclusion criteria for studies included all relevant articles published in English, and exclusion criteria also included letters to the editor, lack of access to the full text of the articles, and studies presented at conferences, with the exception of conferences related to international organizations.
Results: In the present study, a total of 84 articles were reviewed, and finally the results of 23 relevant articles were included in the study. Based on the results of the studies, the use of aspirin to prevent preeclampsia in high-risk women leads to savings in care and treatment costs for mothers and newborns and largely prevents the occurrence of maternal and fetal consequences and risks of preeclampsia.
Discussion and Conclusion: The use of aspirin to prevent preeclampsia is cost-effective and its prescription is recommended to save on care and treatment costs for mothers and newborns.
